Leanne Armitage, the founding CEO of The Armitage Foundation, wants to increase diversity in the medical field in the UK. She is a qualified doctor coming from humble beginnings and is living proof that one is not limited by their socioeconomic background, gender and ethnicity. Also the author of The Power of a Dream, Leanne is available to hire as a speaker, Leanne uses her own experiences to relay that very message.
In her youth Leanne was exposed to situations that moulded her into the person she is, and it was what led her to become a doctor. Despite having no familial or other connections that would help her achieve her goals, Leanne was still able to persevere and get 10 A*’s in her GCSE exams. This helped her get the ‘A Better Chance’ Bursary from Mill Hill School. While she was rejected for medical school the first time around, Leanne used her gap year to work as the Head of Administration for Revive Congo, Support Worker for Doctors of the World, Chair of the Youth Committee at Free the Children and as Public Speaker for Asthma UK.
While now the Founding Chair of Aleto Medical Mastermind Group, in 2014, Leanne was able to study at St George’s University of London and was offered the Southwark Scholarship, whilst also volunteering at Integritas Healthcare and completing her placement that required her to provide healthcare to Filipino prisoners. The alarming lack of diversity in medical schools in the UK was a point of contention for Leanne and this was why she created the Armitage Foundation. The Armitage Foundation helps students from under-represented backgrounds to make their way into medical schools thus increasing diversity in the medical schools.
With accolades like UK Queen’s Young Leaders Award, Aleto Foudation Tomorrow’s Leader Award, WeAreTheCity Rising Stars Award for Healthcare, Akindolie Medical Scholarship, Wintrade Women Trailblazers Highly Commended Award and the NEON Student of the Year Award to her name, Leanne’s work is revered. Graduating with an MBBS and becoming an FY2 Doctor at Royal Sussex County Hospital, Leanne was also made a Member of the BMA BAME Forum Steering Group. A seasoned speaker with a mission to increase diversity in the medical field, Leanne Armitage will make an excellent speaker at your next event. Enquire now!
