Ruby began what would become a successful acting career in classical training at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Here she found her talent for comical acting, ultimately landing a role in the sitcom Girls On Top. Establishing a distinctive comic style, Ruby was fortunate to secure writing credits for the iconic sitcom Absolutely Fabulous. Ruby soon acquired legendary status in the media industry, a status that later led to ten self-titled documentaries.
Although Ruby thrived during her time as an acclaimed actress, she too battled her inner mental demons. Such personal struggles motivated her to attend the University of Oxford to complete a Masters Degree in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy. Ruby was able to start delivering performances that removed the stigma surrounding mental health issues, using a combination of world-class performance, in-depth expertise of the brain and the science of mental health. With her newfound expertise, Ruby was also able to craft her knowledge into an accessible and fascinating manual and theatre show, helping people to better understand human behaviour, titled Sane New World: Taming the Mind. Her creation was well-received, later obtaining credit as a Sunday Times bestselling book and theatre show.
Mental health is now a sole priority of Ruby’s, having worked tirelessly at the Home Office and Downing Street, as well as becoming a patron for the British Neuroscience Association and a high-profile ambassador for charities such as Mind and SANE. Working in partnership with Marks & Spencer, Ruby has also launched Frazzled Café, a safe place where people can receive support regarding their mental health in a non-judgmental environment. In 2017 Ruby also became president of the leading charity Relate, specialising in relationship support.
Continually developing her credibility in the subject, Ruby has toured worldwide delivering insights into the workings of the brain and our mentality, such as her TEDGlobal talk What’s So Funny About Mental Illness. She has also enriched audiences with her knowledge at the National Mindfulness Conference, Women of The World Festival and The Royal College of Nursing. Highly considered as an exceptional speaker, Ruby has a plethora of anecdotes waiting to be shared with willing audiences worldwide. Both a tactful and decorous speaker, Ruby is empowering in her speeches encouraging others to speak of their challenges surrounding mental health. A leading professional, Ruby is determined to help others achieve mindfulness and come to terms with mental health.
