Moorcroft’s biggest achievements include gold medals in the 5000m at 1982’s Commonwealth Games and in the 1500m at the 1978 Commonwealth Games. In between, in 1981, he also came first in the European Cup 5000m.
David has also won silver and bronze medals in various European Championships. Plagued by crippling injuries – including a broken leg and a pelvic disorder – which prevented him from winning more medals, Moorcroft hung up his track shoes in the late 1980s, getting an MBE in 1983 and an OBE in 1998 for services to sport.
In 1997, he became Chief Executive of UK Athletics, a job he held for 10 years. The motivational speaker is still the UK record holder for the 3000m race.
Watching Moorcroft run was a majestic experience that stirred emotions and lifted people’s spirits and he brings that feeling to his presentations, where you can see people are visibly affected by David’s stories of guts, passion and commitment. Just watch his 5000m record-breaking victory in Oslo in 1982 and you cannot fail to be moved.
