Andrew Amery was the Head of Security for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. After a career in Royal close protection, Andrew was assigned to lead all security protection for the funeral of the Queen Mother and the Golden Jubilee before being recruited by Locog.
During 2012, Andrew was in charge of overseeing all security for the Olympic Games in London, his vast role making him responsible for countless of lives. From cyberattacks to public order, petty crime to terrorist threats, Andrew had to coordinate a solution for all of them.
Working with the military, the police, the government and the IOC, Andrew consistently protected the people of London and those visiting the games. As well as the domestic organisations, Andrew also had to work with, and occasionally against, the security and police forces from every country represented at the Olympic Games.
Having been the first person appointed to deal with security, Andrew saw his team grow exponentially from a handful of people to thousands of staff and management. He had to incorporate the priorities of organisers, sponsors, government, the public and participants, where the enjoyment of thousands of people had to be measured against the risk of potential and perceived threats.
Andrew is one of the UK’s leading security professionals, an expert in security management, strategy and planning, as well as assessing how organisations view security. With his many years of security experience, Andrew speaks openly about the thankless task of security, and some of the strange requests and experiences he had in his career.
