Adair Turner is Chairman of the Institute for New Economic Thinking, a New York City-based nonprofit think tank founded in October 2009 as a result of the 2007–2012 global financial crisis. It is described as 'devoted to developing and sharing the ideas that can repair our broken economy and create a more equal, prosperous, and just society'. On the basis of this role, he wrote a book entitled 'Between Debt and the Devil: Money, Credit, and Fixing Global Finance', published in 2016.
Turner is also the former Chairman of the Financial Services Authority, holding the position until the role was abolished 2013. He is a highly respected academic with numerous other prestigious roles including former Chairman of the Pensions Commission and the Committee on Climate Change, as well as former Director-General of the Confederation of British Industry.
After graduating from Cambridge, Adiar taught economics part-time, leading him into a career with BP started in 1979, and a director position at McKinsey & Co in 1994. From 1995 to 1999, Adair was the acting Director-General of the Confederation of British Industry, a role that saw him play an imperative role in Britain’s future. Moving to Merrill Lynch Europe, he was their Vice-Chairman in 2000 until 2006. As an expert in his field, Adair lectures at the London School of Economics. One of the most notable events he featured at was in 2010 when he delivered three lectures on Economics after the Crisis, which were later published by MIT Press.
In 2005, Adair was honoured as Baron Turner of Ecchinswell in the County of Hampshire, in response to his service to the nation. At present, he sits as a crossbencher under this title. Adair has attended countless speaking events, including the CBI Climate Change Summit in 2008. In 2016 he was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society. A testament to his skill as a speaker, he continues to feature at some of the biggest industry events across the country.
