Phyll Opoku-Gyimah is a renowned political and LGBT rights activist, advocating for racial and gender equality. At the very beginning of her career, Phyll worked at the Fraud Investigation Service as an Executive Officer for nearly 13 years. Before that she also spent some time as a civil servant at DWP. Later, Phyll became the Head of Political Campaigns and Equality at the Public and Commercial Services Trade Union after holding several different positions at the organisation. As co-founder and Executive Director of Black Pride, a community celebration for LGBTQI+ members from different ethnicities launched in 2005, Phyll intends to cultivate an environment where people feel safe to be who they are, regardless of their sexuality, gender identities, cultures and backgrounds. Phyll’s work towards ensuring racial equality also let her to sit on the TUC race relations committee. She also writes a column for Diva Magazine - one of the foremost magazines for LGBTQI women and non-binary people.
Today Phyll serves as Executive Director at Kaleidoscope Trust. With a similar aim to that of Black Pride, Kaleidoscope Trust is a UK based charity that works to make LGBT+ people feel safe and guarantee them equality. For her contributions towards the community, Phyll has received several honours and accolades. She was included on the World Pride Power List, Independent Rainbow List of the Top 100 Most Influential LGBT People, and the 100 Great Black Britons list. Phyll was also recognised as an MBE in 2016 but decided to reject this honour bestowed upon her because of the colonialism involved in the Empire, although she acknowledged the significance of this title.
