With a solid educational foundation after studying for a Bachelors Degree in Economics at Harvard University and Masters and Doctoral degrees in Economics at the University of Oxford, Mark began his banking career at Goldman Sachs. Spending 13 years with the multinational investment bank, Mark was fortunate to work globally from a range of locations such as Boston, Toronto, New York City, Tokyo and London. He progressed through the ranks, holding senior positions of Co-Head of Sovereign Risk and Managing Director of Investment Banking. Mark was fortunate to work on some of the greatest events to happen in the financial sector building his now revered expertise, such as the 1998 Russian financial crisis. Capturing the attention of many financial officials, Mark was appointed as the Senior Associate Deputy Minister of Finance for the Department of Finance in 2004.
In 2008, Mark was appointed as the Governor of the Bank of Canada. Joining during the financial crisis of 2007, Mark was pivotal in helping Canada to avoid the worst effects that the financial crisis posed. At the time Mark was notably the youngest central bank governor in the whole of the G8 and the G20, and in 2012 he was credited as Central Bank Governor of the Year 2012 by Euromoney magazine. Showing impressive dedication and prowess within the sector, Mark was later appointed as the Chairman of the Financial Stability Board in 2011.
Mark’s best-known role was his time spent as the Governor of the Bank of England, which he was appointed in 2012 by George Osbourne. His appointment sparked interest, as he was the first non-Briton to be selected to fill the position since the bank was established back in the 1600s. His unrivalled experience was put to the test during this role, spending seven years at the bank working through events such as Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic. Mark has since stepped down as the Governor of the Bank of England, diversifying his interests into climate change and accepting the role as the United Nations special envoy for climate change action and finance. In 2020 Prime Minister Boris Johnson decided to appoint Mark as the financial advisor for the COP26 United Nations Climate Change Conference, further crediting his authority as a financial and economical speaker.
