How To Maintain Your Motivation

Everyone has dreams and aspirations, whether it be in our career or personal life. For many, a short-term goal is attainable and they are enthusiastic and happy to put in the hard work required to achieve those goals.

However, for others, even a short-term goal is a struggle, and for most, a long-term goal can seem impossible, as the motivation that was thriving at the start of the journey to your goal withers and fades. How do you sustain that enthusiasm until you have reached your end goal? Well, here are just a few ways to ensure you remain focused when it comes to staying motivated.


Set a goal and have an action plan

It seems obvious, but make sure you know exactly what it is you are aiming for and plan in detail how you’re going to get there. Write down all the steps in your strategy so that you know the exact process to achieve your goals, but be prepared to be flexible, and adapt to any potential changes in circumstance.

Remind yourself why you want to do this

When you have been motivating yourself for long periods of time, it can be easy to lose sight of why you’re putting yourself through it. Regularly review your aims to reignite your motivation and enthusiasm for your project.

Break it down

Within your greater end goal, give yourself some smaller targets that you can achieve along the way, and celebrate them when you do. If the whole task seems too big or daunting, it can appear intimidating and scare off any motivation, so break it down into smaller, more manageable challenges. Celebrate each victory and it will motivate you to continue the task.

Be prepared for failure

Failure at some point along the way is inevitable, but don’t let it knock you down. Everybody experiences failures, and in many cases, they can actually be the making of an endeavour. Learn from mistakes that have been made rather than dwelling on them or making them again. Stay positive!

Be inspired by others

Surround yourself with people who support you; often when you run out of motivation for yourself, a friend or colleague’s encouragement will get you back on track.
